A New Direction

27 Aug

I have not baked anything in almost three months. As the saying goes,  if you really love something, you will continue to do it. However, that does not hold true for me.  Back in May I started my new job working at a local bakery.  I learned several important things about starting a new business: the importance of butter to crumbs and how rude people can be when you’re behind a counter.  On my day off, I wanted to be out in the world, soaking up the last remnants of summer, visiting farmers markets and seeing friends.  But I felt like I was giving part of myself away by settling.  Settling for a job that I knew in my heart wasn’t what I wanted to do. A couple of months ago, I was certain that I wanted to be a baker but now I know it is not the job for me. I love being able to come up with new recipes and make them come alive in my tiny kitchen.  That doesn’t happen when you are working under the gun to whip up 100 cheesecakes in a day.  Instead, you suffer from blurry vision and the nauseous smell of sugar and butter.  Through all of this though, I have learned what makes me truly happy. The sound of my fingers on the keyboard, seeing my new Foodzie box on my doorstep and baking not because I have to but because I want to.

I would love to combine my passion for writing with my love of food. And you know what ? I might just do that. It ‘s scarey to start a whole new path in life but I have never been more excited to see what the future will hold for me.  Stay tuned for a new recipe on Monday. I promise the three month wait will be worth it!

Wow! Gongrats. That’s wonderful. I think knowing what you don’t want to do is half the battle to learning what you do want to do. Can’t wait for the next chapter of your life to come a live.

I have slowly been learning that baking isn’t what I want to do, either. It was a hard thing to face, as I still haven’t a clue what I want to do with my life now! I suppose it can be liberating, too. I’m glad to see that you’re excited about what comes next. 🙂
